What I'm Watching/Reading

I've been busy with life things, who knows if I'll catch up/keep up this year.

Movie goal: 3/52

No specific movies are next on the watchlist - maybe some of the best picture noms? So far I've only seen Sinners, but I'm curious about a lot of them this year.

Book goal: 3/52 (not including mountains of fic)

Currently rereading salt slow by Julia Armfield and A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske (fun fact, found her pre-Marvellous Light through her fic!). I've got two weeks left on my library loan for After Hours at Dooryard Books by Cat Sebastian, and I'm waiting impatiently for my hold on We Breed Lions by Rick Westhead because I need it for fic research.

TV is always weird, but I'm usually watching something. Always rewatching Heated Rivalry and rewatching the entirety of Elementary every fall. Currently catching up on The Pitt. Need to watch Artful Dodger season 2, and want to pick ER and Buffy back up at some point. Still bereft without a weekly TV show (911 had a standing appointment in my schedule for 5 seasons, I don't know what to do without it).

What I'm Working On

Fic: How Lucky He Is - 3.5k, Svetlana outsider POV

I have a Shane Hollander thesis that I'm chipping away at (wip snippet). It probably won't be done until April/May but it's my baby and I'm obsessed. As of yesterday I'm maybe also doing a Heated Rivalry Artful Dodger AU? I'll see if this AU still makes sense when I get to dodger season 2.

Have to spend some time reading, but will probably make another list in the next few months since people loved this one so much. Might post rec lists here too? Dreamwidth feels a little friendlier for long-form posts and my rec lists are, I think, impossible to shorten.

what i am reading lately: recently finished beartown by fredrik backman, as well as an absurd amount of hrpf (500k in like 5 days). this is like mcr all over again! i have purchased the dragonriders of pern by anne mcaffrey and am slowly but steadily making my way through we breed lions by rick westhead. of course, i must also read private rites by julia armfield at some point, which is sitting unopened and staring back at me...

what i am writing lately: i have decided not to beat myself over the head with revisions on any of my original fiction until i feel compelled to do so. however i would like to work my way through a novella at some point this year. the problem is i am entirely too preoccupied with the delight of heated rivalry and the mess there in order to get my head on straight. i am sure whatever i write will have the afterimage of those guys all over it. it is inevitable!

as for fic, well, of course i am trying to finish chapter 4 of at pinpoint, which is planned out, but plans are known to change. as is evident by the spike from 2 chapters to 4. and the inevitable shane pov follow-up... i am also very much excited for the aptly named wip "raw meat & retirement" in which i return to my favorite: body horror, magical realism, and then the "rookie ilya captain shane hockey and magical powers magic realism slow burn summer party vibes" wip might get written. less succinctly named. if something else strikes my fancy i will pursue that first.

what you should tell me if you read this: writing craft things that intrigue you! craft things you want to work on! i miss lecturing and would like to discuss writing and improving writing and cool wriitng things again but somewhere outside my usual avenues (tumblr, twitter) so maybe i will make some "craft posts" here... put it in the comments, friends and strangers!!

The First Post and Maybe Only Post

Some years down the line, when this is too inconvenient, when Hollander stops texting him back, when Ilya gets bored, Hollander’s going to remember Toronto 2010. And it doesn’t matter that Ilya knows the first day they hooked up was a Thursday, or that he can recall the rough scratch of the hotel bedding on his skin. It doesn’t matter that he was the one who demanded his agent email CCM back and say, Get Hollander in there, too. Or that, when Hollander was hard and anxious in the showers, something inside of Ilya rattled with so much want that he felt it in his fingers.

If he puts enough bodies between himself and that Thursday in Toronto, he will forget. If he wants to, he can stop picturing Hollander’s throat bobbing, his hesitant glance downward as Ilya kissed his way down his chest, eager but still nervous. Not sure yet how to let his body do the talking. Ilya will move on with his life. He will fuck other people. He will marry, and some decades from now, Hollander’s photo might pop up for a wedding announcement, crisp shirt collar sitting low, and Ilya won’t even think about his teeth on that neck, his needle through the skin.

Ilya will be able to forget Toronto.

Performing some traffic maintenance today

Happy Saturday!

I'm going to be doing a little maintenance today. It will likely cause a tiny interruption of service (specifically for www.dreamwidth.org) on the order of 2-3 minutes while some settings propagate. If you're on a journal page, that should still work throughout!

If it doesn't work, the rollback plan is pretty quick, I'm just toggling a setting on how traffic gets to the site. I'll update this post if something goes wrong, but don't anticipate any interruption to be longer than 10 minutes even in a rollback situation.
